Celebrating the life of
Marcia Fobes Smith
Passed away on March 15, 2014
SAVANNAH - Marcia F. Smith, 80, of Savannah and formerly of Birmingham, MI, died on March 15, 2014 after falling down while on a Caribbean cruise.
Mrs. Smith was born in Goshen, Indiana, the daughter of John & Helen Fobes. She graduated from Ward Belmont Preparatory School in Nashville, TN. Before her marriage, she attended Indiana University and was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and Phi Beta Kappa Scholastic Honorary Society.
She married Ned A. Smith in 1953 and, following his graduation from Northwestern University Law School, moved to Birmingham, MI. In Michigan, she was Secretary, a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the Junior League of Birmingham. She was also a member of the Birmingham Athletic Club and Orchard Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. An energetic volunteer, she spent several hours each day transcribing books into Braille as gifts to blind children. She also provided the Braille transcriptions for the gardens in Savannah's Forsyth Park.
In Savannah, she was a member of the Landings Club and a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 60 years and by her children Wade of Savannah and Sarah of La Porte, IN. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Austin, Grayson, & Bailee Smith of Savannah and Jacob & Megan Shriner of La Porte.
Mrs. Smith was a direct descendent of Peregrine White who was born on the Mayflower in November 1620, as it sailed into Cape Cod Bay. Peregrine's father, William White, died the following February and in May his mother, Susanna, married Governor Winslow of the Plymouth Colony. Peregrine and his brother, Resolved, were named as children of the Governor and became prominent citizens of the Massachusetts Colony.
A memorial service for Mrs. Smith will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Savannah on Saturday, March 29th at 11 a.m., followed by a reception in the parish hall. Interment in St. Peter's Memorial Garden will take place at a later family service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marcia's memory should be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 3 West Ridge Road, Savannah, GA, 31411.

Dear Smith Family, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Death is something that pains us all, we never want to see our love ones go. I will like to send my condolence to the family and friends, as well as, to share a comforting scripture. It's Rev 21:4- ' And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” May this scripture bring comfort to you all, for this is a loving promise from our heavenly Father, a promise that soon all suffering will end, especially death.
